Green Table Reverie

In Green Table Reverie, Alvi Siren transforms a familiar arrangement of vessels, fruit, and vegetables into a fluid, semi-abstract composition. Painted in 2001, the work is immersed in shades of emerald, turquoise, teal, and muted blue, allowing individual objects to emerge gradually from the surrounding field of colour.

A pale pitcher stands slightly left of centre, its broad body, open rim, and curving handle outlined against the darker background. Behind it, a taller vessel rises towards the upper edge, its softened contours merging with vertical passages of green. Together, the two vessels provide structure within an otherwise shifting pictorial space.

Across the foreground, pears, peppers, a red onion, cauliflower, and other produce overlap in a loosely gathered arrangement. Warm accents of orange, yellow, crimson, and violet interrupt the dominant green palette, bringing selected forms forward without fully separating them from one another.

The cloth beneath the objects appears to sweep and fold across the composition, blurring the boundary between tabletop, background, and still-life arrangement. On the left, a shallow container filled with red-orange fruit partly dissolves into the surrounding colour, while dark curved lines and broad strokes connect the vessels with the produce below.

Rather than defining every object precisely, Alvi allows colour and gesture to shape the composition. Green Table Reverie occupies the threshold between still life and abstraction, transforming a kitchen harvest into a dreamlike interplay of emerging forms, softened contours, and enveloping green.
