In Water Lilies Study, Alvi Siren explores two floating blooms through colour, reflection, and direct painterly gesture. Set against a cool grey-blue ground, the flowers appear suspended on the surface of water, their red petals opening outward amid loose white strokes that suggest movement, light, and surrounding ripples.
The blossoms are painted in deep crimson, burgundy, red, and dark rose tones, with bright yellow centres adding warmth and focus. The left bloom is more densely worked, its petals defined by dark outlines and saturated colour, while the right bloom opens more broadly, its rounded form glowing against the cooler background. Together, the two flowers create a quiet balance between weight and lightness.
Alvi’s brushwork remains open and exploratory, in keeping with the nature of a study. Visible marks, layered strokes, and areas of softened paint reveal the process of observation and construction. Around the flowers, white and pale grey gestures create a sense of water shifting around the blooms, blurring the boundary between flower, reflection, and ground.
The background is restrained yet atmospheric, built from blue-grey, green, white, and muted violet tones. Rather than describing a precise pond or landscape, this cool field acts as a space of reflection, allowing the red flowers to stand forward with clarity. The contrast between the warm petals and the subdued watery surface gives the study both intimacy and depth.
As a developed study, Water Lilies Study becomes an investigation of floating form, colour contrast, and painterly movement. Through vivid red blooms, luminous centres, and fluid surrounding marks, Alvi Siren captures the water lilies as delicate but grounded presences – observed closely, yet alive with the shifting energy of water and light.
