Note: this artwork is a study
In Apples on the Branch Study, Alvi Siren explores a cluster of apples held among bright leaves and deep green shadow. The composition is close and concentrated, bringing the fruit forward so that rounded forms, branching stems, and surrounding foliage become the focus of the study.
The apples are painted in soft pink, pale yellow, green, cream, and touches of red. Their rounded shapes are defined with loose dark contours and expressive strokes, giving each fruit a sense of volume while preserving the immediacy of observation. Some apples appear more fully coloured, while others remain pale and lightly worked, suggesting different stages of ripening.
Alvi’s brushwork is open and energetic, in keeping with the exploratory nature of a study. Broad leaves sweep upward and around the fruit in yellow-green, emerald, and turquoise tones, creating movement across the composition. The visible canvas texture and broken areas of paint allow the process of construction to remain present.
The background is a dense field of dark green, which heightens the lighter apples and vivid leaves. Rather than describing a detailed orchard setting, the surrounding colour creates an atmosphere of foliage and shade. This contrast gives the study both freshness and depth, allowing the apples to glow within the green enclosure.
As a developed study, Apples on the Branch Study becomes an investigation of fruit, leaf, and growing form. Through loose mark-making, bright colour, and rhythmic arrangement, Alvi Siren captures the apple branch as a moment of natural abundance – tactile, fresh, and alive with painterly movement.
