Note: this artwork is a study

In Berry Branch Study, Alvi Siren explores a cluster of dark berries growing from a branching stem, surrounded by loose green foliage. The composition has the directness of observation, with the plant brought close to the surface so that fruit, branch, and background become part of one expressive study.

The berries are painted in deep burgundy, crimson, violet, and purple tones, gathered in a compact cluster on the left side of the composition. Their rounded forms are shaped with darker outlines and lighter highlights, giving the fruit a sense of weight and ripeness while preserving the immediacy of the artist’s marks.

Alvi’s brushwork remains open and exploratory. Broad green strokes suggest surrounding leaves and garden growth, while darker brown and red-brown lines define the main branch as it cuts diagonally across the painting. On the right, circular branch-like forms add a structural counterpoint to the softer berry cluster, creating a balance between botanical detail and painterly abstraction.

The background is kept fluid, built from pale greens, blue-greens, whites, and violet touches. Rather than describing a fixed setting, these layered marks suggest light passing through foliage and the shifting texture of a garden or woodland space. Areas of visible canvas and loose edges reinforce the work’s study-like quality.

As a study, Berry Branch Study becomes an investigation of natural form, colour, and rhythm. Through expressive line, rich berry tones, and a lively green ground, Alvi Siren captures the quiet vitality of a branch in growth – observed closely, yet transformed through painterly movement.
