Lilies Through Time

Explore Lilies Through Time, a collection tracing Alvi Siren’s evolving interpretation of the lily from 2002 to 2012.

Beginning with Flickering In The Wind as its opening chapter, painted in 2002, the collection reveals how this recurring floral subject developed through expressive movement, changing colour, and increasingly bold compositions.

Alvi returned to the lily in 2011 with Flame Lilies and Lilies in Bloom, followed in 2012 by Lily and Yellow Lily in Blue. Presented chronologically, the works reveal how the motif evolved across a decade through changes in palette, scale, composition, and painterly intensity.

Viewed together, the five paintings transform the lily into a continuing artistic language. Petals flicker, unfold, and expand across the canvas, moving between recognisable floral form and expressive gesture while revealing new possibilities within a familiar subject.

Flickering In The Wind

In Flickering in the Wind, Alvi Siren presents a single lily at the height of its bloom, transforming its curling petals, projecting stamens, and surrounding buds into a vivid expression of movement. Set against a deep aubergine-plum ground, the flower appears luminous and sculptural, its irregular contours creating the impression of petals stirred by passing air.

Flame Lilies

In Flame Lilies, Alvi Siren presents three lilies as vivid bursts of colour and movement, their red-orange petals opening against a dense field of green leaves and shadow. Each flower turns in a different direction, creating a dynamic arrangement in which sweeping petals, projecting stamens, and surrounding buds appear to radiate across the canvas.

Lilies in Bloom

In Lilies in Bloom, Alvi Siren brings the viewer into a dense garden composition where several lilies open among upright buds, broad leaves, and layered green foliage. The flowers fill almost the entire canvas, creating an immersive image of bloom, colour, and vigorous natural growth.

Lily

In Lily, Alvi Siren magnifies a red flower until the bloom becomes an overwhelming presence. Opening across the centre and right side of the canvas, the lily appears to reach beyond the confines of the composition, transforming a familiar botanical subject into a vivid encounter with colour and form.

Yellow Lily in Blue

In Yellow Lily in Blue, Alvi Siren presents the lily as a radiant expression of openness, colour, and contrast. A single bloom fills the centre of the composition, its pale yellow and white petals spreading outward against a cool blue ground. Around the main flower, closed buds and sweeping green leaves suggest the surrounding life of the plant while keeping attention firmly on the central form.
