Glowing in the Dark

In Glowing in the Dark, Alvi Siren presents a gathering of pale tulips emerging against an expansive, near-black ground. Painted in 2002, the close composition removes any conventional garden setting, allowing the flowers to become luminous forms suspended within darkness.

The tulips appear at different stages of opening. Several upright blooms remain partially enclosed, their pointed petals rising like small crowns, while the flowers across the lower half open into broader, more intricate shapes. Their overlapping forms create a dense floral rhythm across the canvas.

White and cream dominate the petals, enriched by pale mint, cool blue, and soft yellow. Green contours follow the folds and divisions of the blooms, while touches of gold introduce warmth to selected interiors. These subtle variations prevent the flowers from appearing uniformly white and give each bloom an individual presence.

Sturdy stems rise from the lower edge in shades of emerald, turquoise, olive, and deep blue-green. Their strong vertical movement supports the clustered flowers above, while differences in height and direction create a natural, irregular progression through the composition.

The background shifts subtly through black, burgundy, deep brown, and muted green. Against this enveloping field, the pale tulips appear almost self-illuminated. Glowing in the Dark transforms a recognisable floral subject into an expressive meditation on light, emergence, and the quiet intensity of forms made visible through contrast.
