The Power of the Sea (Detail View 1), painting by Ukrainian artist Alvi Siren

In The Power of the Sea, Alvi Siren presents the ocean as an expansive and elemental presence. Successive waves move across the horizontal canvas, their rising forms and breaking crests dominating the composition beneath a pale, luminous sky.

The water is built through broad passages of cobalt, ultramarine, turquoise, and deep blue-green. Dark troughs give the waves weight and depth, while sweeping diagonal strokes convey their forward momentum. Rather than describing every change in the surface, Alvi allows colour and gesture to communicate the sea’s continual movement.

White and pale-blue crests interrupt the darker water in rhythmic bands. Some waves fold gently across the middle distance, while those in the foreground break with greater force, their textured foam creating a vivid contrast with the green and blue beneath.

Along the horizon, a low strip of land and scattered trees provide a restrained sense of scale. Above, the sky shifts through cream, soft yellow, pale blue, and touches of pink. A faint sun appears through the luminous atmosphere, its stillness contrasting with the restless water below.

The Power of the Sea captures the ocean not as a quiet view, but as a force in constant transformation. Through layered colour, sweeping movement, and the contrast between breaking waves and distant light, Alvi Siren evokes the sea’s immense energy, depth, and enduring authority.
