In Purple Iris, Alvi Siren presents the flower as a bold, almost theatrical presence, filling the composition with movement, colour, and sculptural energy. Set against a vivid lime-green background, the iris appears to rise forward from the canvas, its petals unfolding in dramatic curves and layered forms.
The painting is built around a striking contrast between violet, magenta, and green. Deep purples define the lower petals, while brighter pinks and lilacs trace the ridges and folds of the upper blooms. These tonal shifts give the flower a sense of depth and animation, as though the petals are turning and opening in response to light.
Alvi’s brushwork is expressive and highly tactile. Thick, directional strokes follow the contours of the iris, emphasising its ruffled edges and twisting structure. Darker lines and shadows create definition within the flower, while flashes of lighter colour bring rhythm and intensity to the surface.
The background is deliberately simplified, allowing the saturated green field to act as both space and illumination. Its brightness heightens the purple tones of the iris and gives the work a contemporary, almost electric atmosphere. At the base, green leaves and closed buds anchor the composition, suggesting growth still continuing beyond the central bloom.
Rather than a delicate floral study, Purple Iris becomes a powerful exploration of form and contrast. Through vivid colour, dynamic brushwork, and a confident sense of scale, Alvi Siren transforms the iris into an image of vitality, elegance, and expressive force.
