Elderflower Light, painting by Ukrainian artist Alvi Siren
Elderflower Light (Detail View 1), painting by Ukrainian artist Alvi Siren

In Elderflower Light, Alvi Siren preserves the delicate architecture of flowering plants within a circular relief. Real leaves, stems, and clustered flower heads appear embedded into the pale surface, transforming natural specimens into a tactile composition between botanical assemblage, painting, and low-relief sculpture.

Tall stems rise from a dense gathering of serrated leaves, dividing into broad clusters of tiny blossoms across the upper half of the plaque. Their open arrangement creates an airy rhythm, with areas of exposed ivory ground allowing light and space to circulate between the botanical forms.

The preserved leaves retain an intricate network of veins, while the slender stems and branching flower heads reveal the plant’s underlying structure. Alvi enhances these details with fresh greens, yellow-green highlights, and touches of warm ochre, allowing the original forms to remain visible beneath the applied colour.

The golden-yellow blossoms provide a luminous contrast to the cooler foliage. Pigment gathers across their uneven surfaces, emphasising the texture of the small flowers and creating subtle changes in brightness as the relief catches the light.

Rather than depicting a plant through observation alone, Elderflower Light incorporates the physical trace of nature into the artwork. The circular format encloses the arrangement like a botanical medallion, preserving a fleeting stage of summer growth within a lasting handmade object.

Through colour, texture, and botanical material, Alvi Siren transforms a modest flowering plant into an intimate record of natural form. Elderflower Light celebrates the fine structures that are easily overlooked – leaf veins, branching stems, and clustered blooms illuminated against a quiet ground.
