In Autumn, Alvi Siren embraces a more expansive and abstract language, transforming the forest floor into a vivid, immersive field of colour and texture. The composition moves beyond direct representation, instead evoking the sensation of the season – its richness, decay, and quiet intensity.

Across the canvas, layers of paint are built up with energetic, almost visceral force. Deep reds, burnt oranges, cool blues, and earthy browns collide and intermingle, suggesting fallen leaves, damp soil, and the shifting light of autumn. The surface is highly tactile, with thick impasto passages that give the work a sculptural depth, inviting the viewer to almost feel the terrain rather than simply observe it.

Amid this expressive landscape, mushrooms emerge – partially defined, partially absorbed into their surroundings. Their forms are hinted at through curved caps and pale stems, but they remain embedded within the painterly flow, as if growing out of the very substance of the canvas. This integration reinforces Siren’s ongoing fascination with hidden life and organic processes.

A striking diagonal movement runs through the composition, a lighter, sweeping passage of pale blue and white that cuts across the denser areas of colour. This element introduces a sense of motion – perhaps a path, a stream, or simply the direction of light – guiding the viewer’s eye through the painting and providing a moment of visual breathing space amid the intensity.

The upper portion of the work dissolves further into abstraction, with layered, gestural marks suggesting branches, foliage, or the fragmentation of forms under seasonal change. The result is a dynamic interplay between structure and dissolution, presence and disappearance.

Autumn is less a depiction of a place than an evocation of atmosphere and transition. In this work, Alvi Siren captures the essence of a season in flux – where growth gives way to decay, colour deepens, and the hidden cycles of nature become momentarily visible.
